The lifeline of Moshi Municipality lies in trade. The dominant types of trade include retail and wholesale outlets, hospitality industry, supermarkets, food markets and itinerants. Most of the trading activities are carried out in the Central Business District (CBD) that covers Mawenzi, Kiusa, Bondeni, and part of Korongoni wards. This sub-sector employs and generaltes income for more than 50% of the municipal population. The existing trade facilities are limited relative to the increase in population which leads to increase in demand. In addition, the rising middle class demands modern and expanded trade falicilties. This calls for improvement of existing market structures and construction of more convenient shopping facilities. Area for redevelopment into a modern food market in Bondeni ward (0.69 hectares) area for construction of modern supermarket in Kilimanjaro Ward (0.2 hectares). Areas for redevelopment into shopping malls in Mawenzi Ward (0.045 hectares), potential investment opportunities in modern food markets Mbuyuni, Bondeni, Pasua and Majengo.
